AIR SHAKE
A speculative installation on the future air quality of public spaces in Greece after the financial crisis.
AIR SHAKE imagines a near future in which breathable air has become a scarce and unevenly distributed resource. Air pollution is understood as a boundary-less, scale-less and heterogeneous entity, an invasive matter/energy residue that transcends political, social, spatial, territorial, glandular and even cellular boundaries. As contaminants infiltrate buildings, lungs, and ecosystems, air pollution renders the most vital necessity for living organisms into a noxious form of betrayal inducing a social paranoia. Architecture can no longer function as a benign form of protection, a passive enclosure; instead, it becomes an active mediator of atmospheric conditions.
The project takes Athens as its point of departure. Following the financial crisis circa 2011, increased taxation on domestic heating led many households to burn random cheap available materials, resulting in the excessive release of particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and other carcinogens, which eventually disemboweled the livelihood of citizens and their right to breathe in the city. Persistent layers of toxic smog were trapped over the city by its surrounding mountains. Projecting these conditions into the near future, AIR SHAKE imagines a city where clean air has become a form of infrastructure and a new public resource. Citizens seek refuge in therapeutic air stations that produce customized atmospheric mixtures, while breathing itself becomes a political and economic condition.
The installation speculates on future diseases generated by contemporary air pollutants and proposes a series of architectural "air shakes" as imagined cures. A field of inverted chimneys dispenses distinct atmospheric mixtures—varying in density, color, smell, and chemical composition—while an accompanying virtual environment allows visitors to inhabit and visualize these invisible atmospheres. Together, the physical and digital installations transform pollution into a tangible spatial experience, making visible the otherwise imperceptible relationship between environmental contamination and public health.
Rather than presenting technical solutions, AIR SHAKE asks how architecture might render atmospheric crises perceptible before they become irreversible. The project proposes architecture not as an object of protection, but as a virtual healing environment that allows the physical embodiment of the visitors to project and immerse themselves in the political, ecological, and physiological dimensions of the air we collectively inhabit.
