Cloud Ecologies
A proposal for Harvesting Weather and Cultivating Biodiversity
Cloud Ecologies is a constellation of ten programmed ground pavilions and eleven aerial balloon clusters distributed across the North and East Mounds of Freshkills Park. Together they establish a dual topography: a terrestrial landscape of public activity and biodiversity, and an atmospheric landscape that harvests energy from the movement of weather itself. The ground and air systems operate reciprocally, generating renewable energy while creating new habitats for humans and other species across the scale of the park.
The location of each ground pavilion and balloon cluster was determined by mapping the distribution of solar radiation and high-altitude wind intensity across Freshkills Park. Energy is harvested through two complementary systems. In the atmosphere, clustered balloon modules capture the kinetic forces of high-altitude winds through networks of piezoelectric cables. Rather than functioning as isolated devices, the balloons operate collectively, generating energy through their continual movement and collision. On the ground, solar-powered thermal chimneys create convection currents that activate a second network of piezoelectric cables, producing electricity while generating localized thermal environments.
In Cloud Ecologies, program is not simply a matter of use; it is the mechanism through which ecological relationships are produced. Each pavilion organizes human activities, renewable energy generation, and multispecies habitats within the same architectural system. Pavilions accommodate programs such as fishing, roller sports, observation, play, and water recreation, while their perimeters form a thermally moderated habitat for native flora and fauna. Heat produced by the thermal chimneys creates microclimates that support threatened species and extend outdoor occupation throughout the year, transforming recreation and habitat restoration into a shared environmental system.
Above, each balloon cloud becomes an atmospheric energy field that reshapes the skyline with a dynamic, joyful presence. Floating at an altitude of approximately 2,625 feet, the balloon clusters are tethered to the ground through two layered webs of piezoelectric cables that maintain controlled movement while preventing entanglement. The continual tension and compression generated by wind-induced motion are converted into electricity and transmitted to the ground. Each cloud is capable of producing enough energy to meet the annual demand of approximately seven American households.
Cloud Ecologies proposes weather itself as an architectural material. Rather than separating energy production, ecological restoration, and public life, it interweaves them into an environmental system where atmosphere, landscape, infrastructure, and habitation become mutually reinforcing. Built on the reclaimed ground of Freshkills Park, the project imagines a new form of environmental commons in which renewable energy and biodiversity are cultivated together, allowing both human and nonhuman communities to flourish.
Cloud Ecologies proposes weather itself as an architectural material. Human occupation, renewable energy generation, and ecological regeneration are conceived as interdependent processes, with the atmosphere, the landscape, and the program continuously shaping one another. Built on the reclaimed terrain of Freshkills Park, the project imagines a new environmental commons in which public life becomes a catalyst for biodiversity, and biodiversity, in turn, enriches the experience of inhabitation.
